From employee to consultant.
consultant to business leader
Comms People exists to give communications consultants the structure, support, and credibility they need to run their businesses like businesses, not side hustles.
We’re here to transform comms consultants from doers into thinkers, from freelancers into founders of their own businesses, and from optional extras into indispensable partners to the companies they serve.
Our mission
We believe comms is the last true human advantage in a world flooded with AI-driven noise — and founders can’t afford to get their story wrong in pivotal moments. Our community is built on that truth.
We don’t offer vague networking or endless chatter. We provide clear playbooks, ongoing guidance, and a network of peers who know what it takes to land clients, deliver impact, and build trust when the stakes are highest.
Our focus
Shifting your mindset from employee to bad ass business owner. Your clients are not your boss — they are working with you because you’re a qualified, worthy business partner. This mindset shift takes time and guidance. We teach you how to be a better business owner by learning to become ruthlessly problem-driven and identify the problems founders are desperate to solve.
Confidently package your services. Founders need support they can use today, not “someday.” Position yourself as the go-to expert in your space by showing up ready to fix their problems — not exploring if you’re a fit. Test your pricing, refine your pitches, and compare strategies with other consultants in the community who’ve been in your shoes to do this from day one.
Refine, pivot, and evolve. From discovery calls to proposals to launch strategies, you’ll sharpen your craft with real feedback, mentors, and peers who want you to win.
Grow with support, not alone. Get the mentorship, guidance, and tested frameworks you need to get your business running and land clients—because in consulting, time literally is money.
Just getting started? We’ve built practical roadmaps — based on real-world consulting wins and lessons — to help you define your services, structure your business, and land your first client.

Hi, I’m Katie
I’m an active comms consultant, the co-founder of Comms People and the co-host of the Smart in Public podcast.
My consulting journey started like the day I was born: crying, unemployed, and alone.
Now that I’m three years in, I can honestly say that there has never been a better time to be a consultant. While full-time employees grapple with the fear of redundancy in the age of AI, comms consultants are gaining a superpower.
AI tools and capabilities will generate more founders than ever before. And, in a world of AI-generated content full of uniformed sentences and phrases, those new founders won’t be just fighting for customers, they’re fighting for narrative – but they can’t afford full-time top talent. Comms consultants are the last true human advantage for founders to stand out to their stakeholders. They need us, and they need us now.
If you’re willing to make the leap, the opportunity is massive… but most consultants don't survive their first year. That’s because doing comms is really hard and completely different when you’re on your own. You must shift your mindset from employee to business owner, you lose your team (this is the hardest part), you’re constantly researching and developing new resources, all while trying to get new and serve existing clients.
Sadly, your experience as a comms person doesn’t guarantee success as a consultant.
That's why we built Comms People.
It’s a place for comms people who are looking to build and run bad ass consulting businesses – not be glorified employees. We’re not sitting on job boards or waiting for referrals. We are researching business and pitching services that we know founders will need. We’re fearless in growing our network and investing in our learning. We know our worth and lift up our entire industry by clearly articulating how we help founders tell the stories that will shape our industry narratives for years to come. We’re vulnerable and open-minded so no obstacle can hold us back. And as a result, the Comms People community will arm you with the playbooks, resources, feedback, and ideas that you need to go out on your own and stay out on your own.
