Funny you should ask, Alexandre.

Having worked at a PR agency, in-house, and now owning my own communications business, I get this question a lot. My answer: All three have incredible value, but it ultimately depends on your vision for your career goals.

Here's the path I took and how it helped me develop my career:Start at an agency: Get a sense for the pace of PR, and learn techniques on how to work effectively and quickly. Understand the dynamics of comms/PR as a team sport. Learn how to pitch and not to pitch. Build relationships with journalists. Learn how to deliver exceptional client services.Go in-house: Now your execs are your clients - this is where the finesse of expectation setting and challenging intuition kicks in. By having worked at an agency, you will better understand how to properly manage and collaborate with an agency (don’t be 'that client’) in order to get the biggest impact. An in-house role is an incredible opportunity to also broaden your knowledge of all things comms outside media, like internal comms, how to plan in alignment with marketing & events, M&A, and exec comms. In-house is also a great teacher around adaptability!🖖 Freelance / Consulting: Build a personal brand around your credibility, critical thinking, and industry knowledge. Leverage your network. Find the elements from your experience that you not only love, but you’re also the best at and start a business around it. The 'love' element is VERY important to consider because this will now be your whole world!
